Students link up against the war

Students all across the country are mobilising against the Bush/Blair war drive. This week Essex university students were holding a ‘Don’t Go! peace camp outside Colchester barracks. Sussex students are planning a walk-outs at 3pm on the day the war starts; Hereford, civil disobedience from 9am.
There will be an occupation in the School of Oriental and African Studies (London) the day night before the anti-war demo on the 15th. Students at the University of East Anglia are holding a teach-in on Fri 7th, and five ‘Weapons Inspectors’ from Cambridge University broke into RAF Feltwell last week.

The new website, www.studentstopwar.org.uk, is allowing students to find out what’s going on across the country, and in Europe and the USA. It also allows students to coordinate their action better.

Events such as the National Students Against the War meeting called by Oxford University Student Stop the War group (details below) will be very important in strengthening the student anti-war movement by allowing national co-ordination, increased political debate and — hopefully — the development of democratic structures and accountability.

Come to the conference!

The National Union of Students conference will be taking place between 31 March and 3 April. Although “internationalism” has not made it onto the conference agenda (a sign of how dissociated many student unions are from the real world), there will be anti-war motions up for discussion under other headings of debate.

Student supporters of Solidarity have joined together with Socialist Worker Students, the Campaign for Free Education and others to launch a united left challenge to the NUS leadership under the name Education not War. So contact your student union, come to the conference and fight for NUS to oppose the war in action as well as words!

• National Students Against the War conference: Saturday 8 February, noon onwards, New College, Holywell Lane, Oxford.
• New website: http://www.studentstopwar.org.uk
