Our 10 November 2003 international meeting

Submitted by vickim on 8 November, 2003 - 9:58

This meeting was called by the Alliance for Workers' Liberty (Britain), and attended in addition by a delegate from Workers' Liberty Australia and a number of comrades from different currents of the French revolutionary left.
Apart from a final session which discussed brief political reports from Australia and from France, the meeting was given over to discussion of a draft statement presented by the AWL. The conclusion of the discussion was to identify eight points in the draft which required further discussion and on which short amendments would be drafted.

Background articles and discussion papers on these points and others will also be made available.

A further meeting will be convened in Paris in early 2004 to discuss the amendments.

1. Trotskyism. Paras 3 to 9. To redraft so as to state positively what we understand by our allegiance to "Trotskyism" rather than using the shorthand term. To be drafted by Martin Thomas, AWL.

2. Imperialism. Para 10. To expand. To be drafted by Paul Hampton, AWL.

3. Revolutionary Stalinism. Para 13. To explain in what sense the revolutionary strands of Stalinism (China, Vietnam, etc.) were revolutionary, and why they were nonetheless reactionary from the point of view of working-class politics. To be drafted by Paul Hampton, AWL.

4. Productive forces. Para 15. To clarify the question of the expansion of the productive forces under contemporary capitalism. To be drafted by Martin Thomas, AWL.

5. Globalisation of the working class. Para 15. To explain in what way the expansion of world-market capitalism, since 1989-91, has created a more objectively-interconnected and therefore potentially globally-subversive global working class. To be drafted by Melissa White, Workers' Liberty Australia.

6. New anti-capitalism. Para 16. To explain further the question of connections the "new anti-capitalist" movements and the workers' movement. To be drafted by Vincent Présumey.

7. Labour movement. Para 29. To explain further what is meant by "fighting to transform the labour movement". To be drafted by Olivier Delbeke.

8. Consistent democracy. Para 30. To explore the question of democratic demands today, such as "Constituent Assembly". To be drafted by Vincent Présumey.
