Israeli unions end national strike

Israel’s main public sector unions ended a five-day national strike that had shut down much of the economy in May.
The Histadrut labour federation launched the strike in protest at plans to cut the government spending budget by 11 billion shekels ($2.4 billion) to stem a fiscal deficit.

The industrial action held up flights and closed ports, banks, the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, government offices, railways and municipalities. Hospitals were only open for emergencies, and the country’s telephone, electric and water companies did not carry out repairs.

Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to use legislation to limit national strikes in the future.
