Labour shortages often lead to increased bargaining power for workers, whatever their origin. But the way forward is union organisation and struggles, not more border controls.
The labour movement must campaign for re-expanded public services, a four-day standard work-week to spread the jobs, an end to zero-hours, job security for all and an increased minimum wage.
The "vaccine passport" scheme is being initiated far too late to be rolled out with any measure of success, and anyway raises issues the creation of a two-tier society and increasing state surveillance.
The official guidance is confused. We need to assert our rights.
