International dialogue and collaboration

International meeting of November 2003 and follow-up

Draft statement, 10 November 2003 (English)

Draft statement for the international Workers' Liberty meeting called by the AWL in Paris on 10 November 2003. 1. There are openings for the growth of the revolutionary left such as we have not had for two decades. The rise of the global anti-capitalist movements, the tremendous upsurge of opposition to Bush's and Blair's war on Iraq, the growth of new workers' movements in the ex-colonial world, and the limited revival of real trade unionism in some older industrialised countries, have combined to create this situation. 2. Unfortunately the united left organisation the working class needs...

Ukrainian socialists speak in UK

Brie and Olenka, two young socialist feminists and members of the Ukrainian left party, Sotsialny Rukh (Social Movement), recently toured the UK speaking at meetings and talking to activists. The comrades have been hosted by Workers’ Liberty and have addressed meetings in Sheffield, Nottingham, Liverpool and Brighton. Along the way they have discussed with Labour politicians, feminist activists, journalists and trade unionists. Workers’ Liberty believe it is important to listen to the authentic voice of the left in Ukraine, which has been little-heard in the UK. The Ukrainian left and unions...

International greetings to Workers' Liberty conference, January 2020

Various communist groups, internationally, with which we have connections, sent messages for us, for our annual conference. We invite them to also send delegations where possible. We include the messages below. Workers' Liberty in Australia Your work on climate action and a socialist Green New Deal is particularly vital to us, as all round the world, the link is being made between capitalism and climate change. The specific measures needed in Australia are different, reliant as we are on coal and other mineral exports, extensive livestock and cropping in arid lands, combustion engines and...

Why has the ISO collapsed?

On our last count, Stephen Wood’s piece on the collapse of the USA’s International Socialist Organization was the most-read of Solidarity’s articles on our website. In the next issue of Solidarity we hope to have further coverage from one of our people who is in Chicago for a while, and will have a chance to talk face-to-face with ex-ISOers and other left-wingers who’ve been able to observe the ISO up close. Chicago was the ISO’s main base. As yet, there are many questions about the ISO collapse to which we can’t even guess answers. It’s a strange business. The French Trotskyist group which is...

The new opposition in the post-Mandelite Fourth International

1. How the Fourth International's world view was shattered in 1989-91 Since the 1990s, the "Fourth International" has become more and more like a loosely-Marxist think-tank, or association of think-tanks, geared to left social democracy. "Fourth International" here refers to the international network associated with the ideas of Ernest Mandel, otherwise called "USFI" or "United Secretariat of the Fourth International", though it ceased to have a leading body called "United Secretariat" as long ago as 2003. In 1967, the "Mandelite" current had celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Russian...

L'Etincelle conference report: learning from French Trotskyists

On 19-20 November two Workers' Liberty activists attended the annual congress of the small French Trotskyist group L’Etincelle. L’Etincelle originated in the ‘90s as a faction of ‘Lutte Ouvriere’, a larger Trotskyist organisation that expelled them in 2008. Shortly after it joined the newly founded ‘New Anti-Capitalist Party’. They have a strong work-place orientation. They discussed their own activities and the wider situation, heard international reports, and held elections. The detail discussion of L’Etincelle’s activity covered: Organisational Statistics, Finance, the magazine, bulletins...

Leaving principles for later?

At the Lutte Ouvriere fete on 14-16 May, we met comrades from IZAR (Revolutionary Anti-Capitalist Left), a group expelled in 2015 from the “Mandelite” (Fourth International) organisation in Spain because they called for a stance more independent from the leadership of Podemos, the new broad leftish party. The following critique is part of a document published by IZAR with sympathisers in France, the USA, Germany, Greece, and Italy. “There has been no balance-sheet on the many attempts to build ‘broad parties’ over the last 25 years by the sections of the Fourth International. “Whether in the...
