A Chance to Change our Union

How many times have you said that RMT should do things better and differently?

In the approaching election for London Transport Region’s executive member, you will get a chance to vote for someone with an imaginative vision for improving our union. We can make it more democratic for ordinary...

Unison: Prentis calls snap election to secure position

The snap General Secretary election called last Wednesday has exposed the current weaknesses of the left in Unison. Dave Prentis, the incumbent, had the NEC nod through his personal timetable for the ballot. Normally there would be some months of notice before nominations are opened but the current schedule sees the nominating period starting on 4th Feb. Prentis has been General Secretary since taking over control of the union from Rodney Bickerstaffe in 2001. And it has be control rather than leadership that has characterised his term of office. Unison may retain one of the better rule books...

Statement from Workers' Liberty teachers on the NUT deputy general secretary election

It would be better if the individuals and groups who define themselves as left in the Union could agree to support common candidates in national elections. It will be important in the period ahead to consolidate the small majority the left has gained on the national executive and avoid the prospect of Broadly Speaking regaining either the Executive or the GS or DGS positions. Just as important is the need to build a clearer, sharper, more determined left which acts collectively on the key issues facing members, particularly those which require us to mobilise members for action. It would have...

Setbacks in Unison elections

The public services Unison has just published the results of the elections to its National Executive elections. The scores for the contested seats are listed below. The left lost ground across the health sector, and AWL member Kate Ahrens fell victim to that trend, losing her seat by a small margin. Outside of health, the picture is more mixed picture. The overall balance on the Executive is more or less unchanged. Some initial comments from some AWL activists in Unison: "The overall turnout was again utterly abysmal. The elections therefore mean very little about Unison members in general and...

Vote John Moloney for PCS Deputy General Secretary

The coming election for Deputy General Secretary of the civil service union PCS will be a choice between the old centre-right of the union and a candidate, AWL member John Moloney, backed by the Independent Left. The PCS union “machine”, though on paper left wing — dominated by the Socialist Party — will be backing the centre-right candidate, Hugh Lanning. Lanning was the right-wing candidate defeated by left-winger Mark Serwotka in PCS's 2000 general election campaign. Since then he has got the deputy general secretary job — he is running for re-election — and worked closely with the union...

Workplace Election Success

Tubeworker has long advocated that the unions need to make themselves more relevant in the workplace, and one way of doing this is to run more democratic decision-making at work. So we are delighted to report that RMT elected its local reps for Leytonstone drivers in a ballot held on site at the...

RMT Regional Organiser election: Vote Steve Hedley!

RMT members are about to get a say in a very important election. Back Steve Hedley!

Steve Hedley is a candidate in the election for RMT London Regional Organiser. As the RMT in London is facing a big political and industrial fight against Tory mayor Boris Johnson and a potential Tory government intent on breaking the union and imposing pay cuts, this an important election. Steve spoke to Tubeworker , the bulletin produced by AWL tubeworkers. Q: How do you see the role of Regional Organiser? A: The London Transport region of the RMT covers everybody that was once employed by “London Transport”. The organiser should set up organisations of workers in the region to strengthen...

Unison elections

Members of the public service union Unison should have already received ballot papers for the Service Group Executive (SGE) elections being held now. The activist left is standing on a platform of fighting the pay cuts now rather than at some date in the future. A vote for the left might make all the difference to how much money is in members’ pockets during the next three years! For once, there is a decent degree of left unity in these elections. There is only one definite clash, in the London local government general seat. Glenn Kelly of the Socialist Party is standing against United Left...
