The left should start working towards Labour Party conference 2017

The Campaign for Labour Party Democracy has put out this briefing about preparations for the 2017 Labour Party conference.

CLPs should currently be deciding when they will elect their delegates to this year's national Conference.

Conference will be from 24 to 27 September in Brighton this year. It is important that delegates from CLPs reflect the views of Labour's membership. That will help ensure that progressive policies and democratic rule changes are adopted. The hard right wants to defeat such advances so the centre left needs to aim at being strongly represented. Labour First (unlike CLPD) now has full time staff. The hard right are working flat out to get their people as Conference delegates. CLPD supporters must all work even harder. They won in 2016. CLPD does not want a repeat in 2017!!!

CLPs can elect their delegates from 1 January 2017 up until the deadline of Friday 23 June. Many CLPs are likely to act on this early in the year.

CLPs are entitled to a number of delegates, one for the first 749 full members in the CLP on 31 December 2016, and a further delegate for every additional 250 individual members or part thereof.

At least every second delegate from a CLP has to be a woman; where only one delegate is appointed this must be a woman at least in every other year.

Where the individual women’s membership in a constituency is 100 or more, an additional woman delegate may be appointed. Where the individual Young Labour membership in a constituency is 30 or more an additional delegate under the age of 27 may be appointed.

CLPs do not have to appoint their full delegate entitlement. What is important is to ensure that the majority of your CLP’s delegates are centre left, so reflect the views' of Labour's membership.

Please advise CLPD the date when your CLP will be electing its delegates. You can let us know by emailing info@clpd.org.uk. Also, please consider which centre left comrades are in the best position to be elected as your CLP's Conference delegates.

Nominations for CAC and NCC

At the CLP meeting that decides on your Conference delegates it is likely that the issue of nominations of candidates for Labour's 2017 internal elections will also be considered There are two elections this year where CLPs can nominate candidates:-

2 CLP reps on the Conference Arrangements Committee (CAC).

Please nominate Billy Hayes. (Mitcham and Morden CLP, Labour Party Membership Number A065571, CWU and CLPD)

We will advise you on the second person to nominate as soon as possible.

The election for these reps is by One Member One Vote ballot this summer.

CLP reps on the National Constitutional Committee (NCC).

Please nominate:

Anna Dyer (Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn CLP, Labour Party Membership Number L0081865 and CLPD)

and Emine Ibrahim (Hornsey and Wood Green CLP, Labour Party Membership Number L0150489 and CLPD)

The election of these reps is by CLP delegates at Annual Conference in September.

Leaflets with details of the candidates will be circulated in due course. Please advise CLPD who your CLP nominates.

Yours in comradeship,
