Hackney Socialist Unity

Hackney Socialist Unity ...

... is a regular socialist newsletter for Hackney. It used to be called Hackney Solidarity, but we have relaunched it as Hackney Socialist Unity following Janine Booth and Charlie McDonald’s recent candidature for Hackney Council. Initially set up by Marxist group Workers’ Liberty, the newsletter also involves other socialists. The mainstream media is owned and dominated by big corporations. Working-class people need our own voice: we need publications which report and explain issues from our point of view. If you would like to get involved, please get in touch . You could deliver copies on...

Defending Our Homes: People Before Profit

From 'Hackney Solidarity' April 2005 issue, for Aspland & Marcon estates by Janine Booth The future of our estates still hangs in the balance, as the Council continues to attack us, and we as a community – through the Tenants’ & Residents’ Association – do our best to stick up for ourselves and our rights. One thing we can be sure of – the Council does not have residents’ interests at heart, and the ‘consultation’ process is a sham. We’ve had meeting after meeting, jargon upon jargon, one broken promise after another. But it boils down to one thing – we want our estates to be a decent place to...

Hackney Shorts

From 'Hackney Solidarity' April 2005 issue, for Aspland & Marcon estates School gates closed? Rents up again Pensioners cheated Recycling cash Re-open our youth club School Gates Closed? It’s great to have a new secondary school on your doorstep, isn’t it? Especially as it is non-selective, mixed and non-religious, which many parents and kids prefer. If you can get a place there, that is. Many of the estate’s 11-year-olds who applied for Mossbourne Academy have been turned away. We’ve not met one who got in. It seems that academies are able to use their admissions procedures to get the intake...

How to Fight the Fascists

from Hackney Solidarity For years, Britain's fascists were a marginal, street-fighting rump. Now suited and booted, they present themselves as 'respectable politicians', their racist and reactionary views feeding off the betrayals of Blair's Government. They now stand a serious chance of winning seats from the votes of disillusioned working-class people. When the fascists traded in thuggery, the answer was to mobilise the labour movement and local communities against that thuggery. Now they are swimming with the tide of the Express, the Sun, the Mail and the rest of racist press, the answers...
