2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the defeat of Stalinism in Eastern Europe at the hands of workers and students. The movements of 1989 built on the legacies of previous workers’ uprisings against Stalinist rule, including in the 1950s and 60s in East Germany, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia.

The demands of these movements were not for capitalist restoration but for freedom of movement, of association and of the press, democracy and free trade unions and an end to the police state. Some of these they would win by the end of 1989.

North London Workers' Liberty is organising this meeting to discuss what happened and the lessons from the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956.
