Vaccine priority and transport workers

With the government announcement that every adult should be vaccinated by July, there is more jockeying for position among different groups of workers over who gets the vaccine first. Tubeworker knows that our readers probably have different views on this. But we think where we can agree, is that the vaccine roll out should be expanded, more doses made available and we want big pharma to be requisitioned to speed up those supplies.

As to whether transport workers should be above other groups, or indeed all key workers? We know now that vaccines drastically reduce death, hospitalisation and severe illness from Covid. We do not know enough about how they affect transmission. But we can hope it has a real effect. The risk of death and severe illness is much greater for the old and clinically vulnerable. The scientists' decision to prioritise by age and clinical vulnerability is not wrong. We should focus on getting more people vaccinated and not on who should jump the already existing queue.
