We send our solidarity and condolences to the family, friends, and workmates of the three people - two workers and one passenger - who died in the Stonehaven derailment on 12 August.

Donald Dinnie and Bret McCullough, the guard and driver killed, were members of RMT and Aslef respectively. Both unions, as well as TSSA, have issued tributes and statements of condolence.

The official investigation has just begun, but it seems clear that extreme weather, leading to flooding and landslide, played some role in the incident.

The government has granted Network Rail an additional £900m for the 2019-2024 period to respond to the additional threats posed by extreme weather events in the context of climate change. We need workers' control over how that extra funding is spent, and we need our unions to be part of a wider movement that confronts the climate crisis at source: a capitalist economy that sees the planet as exploitable material, the same way it sees human labour.
