Driverless Trains on Show

Posted in Tubeworker's blog on ,

Train-building company Siemens is running an exhibition bigging up what the company can offer for the future London Underground. Lead picture is a train without a driver's cab, and further along the gallery there is automated journey planning and ticket buying. And, of course, not a member of staff in sight.

Perhaps this is just Siemens putting itself in the shop window. Perhaps it is just speculation and fantasy. Maybe it's a bid to host the next Star Trek convention.

But we would be foolish indeed to dismiss the possibility of driverless trains or a staffless Tube. Don't be tempted to rely on the technical demands to stop this.

We can learn a lesson from Helsinki. RMT Executive member Janine Booth recently reported on the Finnish unions' failure to stop the capital's City Council imposing driverless trains, which are now due to star running in 2016. One crucial mistake by the unions was to stop campaigning when driverless trains seemed to be too difficult technically. What happened? A few years later, they came back and announced that they had overcome the technical challenges and it was all systems go.

And the company supplying the driverless train in Helsinki. Yes, Siemens.

We can't rely on technical difficulties to save us. We can only rely on ourselves.
