Runaway Victory?

The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) is prosecuting London Underground, Tube Lines and Schweerbau, the owners of the rail grinder, for the 2010 ‘runaway train’ incident.

As Tubeworker reported at the time: ‘On the Northern Line, at 0640 at Finchley, the rear of an engineering train travelling north on the southbound road became de-coupled and travelled all the way down to Warren Street. It was only stopped by the gradient of the track. There was a train in passenger service ahead at Tottenham Court Road, which was told to drive and keep driving until it got to Kennington’.

It would have hit a train on the Bank branch if a quick-thinking signal operator had not diverted the train via Charing Cross.

At the time LU defied facts and the unions by callously claiming no one had been put at risk.

Now even the the ORR is backing us up. We know we cannot rely on this bosses' body, who have backed management repeatedly over safety concerns, to fight our battles for us.

But when we’re fighting to save engineering safety checks and staffing levels, it’s nice to have our enemies on our side on this one.
