Our New Pay Offer

Posted in Tubeworker's blog on ,

After hours of talks and of course our two days of strike action, management have improved their pay offer. We are now looking at a two year deal: 1.5% this year and RPI plus 0.5% for year two. Good to see that our action has produced some results: scuppering the 5 year nightmare and getting us an extra 0.5%.

But what will this mean in real terms? For CSAs, roughly an extra £360 a year, only around £28 in each pay packet! For drivers or SS1s, about £600; £46 per pay packet. As workers, we really do have to struggle for every little thing in this life! This rise will not cover the increase in one of our utility bills, let alone them all!

Most people don't need telling that this pay offer is inadequate to meet their needs. But because of the recession, some people have lost the conviction to fight for what they need. The idea is almost that we've got to make some token sacrifice: take a crap pay deal that will not improve anything for people losing their jobs, but it will at least appear that we are 'all suffering together'. Just what the world needs! More suffering!

As long as people know that the pay offer is not good enough, over the next weeks we need to convince people that they are right to fight for a better one. We will send a strong signal to other workers by refusing to make sacrifices, and be of more help to them than any token acts of pretend solidarity.
