Protect Night Tube duties!

LS Station at night

With Andy Byford confirming that Night Tube will not return before 2022, there seems to be separate arrangements taking place between stations and Trains. Both Aslef and RMT have argued that night tube drivers should be allowed to go full time rather than the punishing secondments many have been taking up with two night shifts plus 3 other shifts, with little option what those shifts will be a week. Management want to at least temporarily roster the night tube duties into the full time roster and now plan to offer cash incentives to do so. Aslef have accepted this in principle and informed their members. RMT are currently consulting reps. A unilateral move to make all existing Night Tube drivers full time will close down the promotional route from stations to trains for some years to come.

Tubeworker thinks there is a real danger in accepting managements proposal. Cash payments for these duties is the start of a slippery slope. Those duties should be maintained for those who still wish to work those hours and alternative duties found for those that do not. If this is accepted then it makes it much easier for management to try and impose the same on stations. Aslef and RMT have up till now been able to work together on the issue of night tube. Both unions should insist that there is no division on the issue and remember the importance of working alongside the reps in the other affected functions.
