Improvement Notice

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR), the independent transport regulatory body, has issued an official "improvement notice" to LU regarding safety on stations.

The admonishment comes off the back of the tragic incident at Canning Town, where a passenger died after falling down stairs in a non-public area of the station. An investigation clearly showed that job cuts, which led to lone working and the control room being de-staffed, had played a key role.

The ORR's notice is also a direct result of the pressure created by our ongoing campaigns to highlight the affects of cuts on staff and passenger safety. ORR has told our bosses: “You have failed to carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of risks to your employees, arising from lone working at these locations and you have failed to put in a safe system of work to avoid or control those risks.”

This is a big deal, and very much vindicates our campaigning. Let's keep pushing for the reversal of more job cuts to ensure our stations are properly staffed and these preventable tragedies do not occur again.
