Passenger deaths over the last month are a sobering reminder of the dangers of the environment that we work in:
- The man who was hit by a train at Stockwell while apparently picking up his bag has died
- A man was killed while rescuing his brother at Old Street at the end of March
- And while these were tragic accidents, it seems that yesterday's death at Liverpool Street was a suicide
Our thoughts are with the victims' loved ones, and with the drivers, station staff, emergency workers and others who dealt with the aftermath. It is important that they get the support that they need to deal with this trauma.
Sometimes these things can not be prevented, but the efforts we make to defend staffing levels, PTI safety measures etc. undoubtedly save lives. The importance of a driver on every train is underlined by the incident earlier in March at Clapham South where the train stopped in time to prevent serious injury, or worse.
