Time Of The Month

London Bridge station has discovered the depths to which the cleaning contracts allow us to sink. Enquiring as to why the sanitary products disposal unit had not been empty for a while, they were told that, according to the contract, it only has to emptied when it is full.

OK, stop and think about that for a few minutes. Especially if you do not have many women working on your station (quite common, especially on smaller stations), it could take months for the disposal unit to fill up. And you just don't want to think about what is happening to the contents during that time.

This is a heatlh & safety problem for all workers, and an insult to the dignity of women at work. The unions should demand immediate action to ensure that these units are emptied (at least) daily. Failing that, we should be ready to walk out of workplaces where our basic hygiene standards are ignored - and men need to show solidarity with women over this.
