Seasonal Strike

Posted in Tubeworker's blog on ,

Bakerloo line detrainment staff will be striking on Christmas Eve, their fifth day of action against management's plans to force them to work alone.

As in all but the first strike day, other grades will not be striking with them, so it is unlikely that the action will affect the train service. However, it will force managers to stand on freezing cold platforms rather than sitting at home toasting their toes by a real fire.

This small group of staff has shown admirable resolve in keeping this issue alive. Their union, RMT, owes it to them to ensure that it sees it through to a victory.

All supporters are welcome to join the picket line at Queen's Park.

Could you explain that comment please?

Why don't the drivers refuse to detrain alone then?! That would force management to act, wouldn't it? And it would keep you out of harm's way ...

And there was me thinking you might have had a reasonable point until you came out with that judgemental, unsympathetic, ignorant management propaganda.

And if you want to know what harm, you might ask the member of detrainment staff who was dragged the length of the platform and shoved onto the train by some disgruntled football fans. Oh, but *you* mentioned 'danger' in an earlier comment, didn't you?!

I assumed from your earlier comments that you are a driver, not management. So why spout management propaganda?!

And if the detrainment staff didn't genuinely believe it is unsafe to work, then why on earth would they sacrifice five days' pay in strike action to prevent management imposing lone working?!

CValentine - Do you ever blame management for anything? Or is it always the fault of your workmates from other grades?!

Management thrive on attitudes like yours. The detrainment staff have continually explained to you that it is how management organise the work ie. with not enough staff - that prevents them from detraining these particular trains. But will you believe them? Oh no, you jump to your own judgemental conclusions that they are to blame for not making the effort, regardless of the facts. Just so long as it's not your employer's fault, that's OK with you.

Here at Tubeworker, we like to support and empathise with Tube workers in their various grades and locations. Imagine the boot were on the other foot. If staff in another grade slag off drivers ("they're sectionalist, they got the shorter working week before everyone else, they get better mess facilities than everyone else, they refuse to work on spurious safety grounds when really they're just lazy, blah blah"), we defend drivers and point out that bitching between grades just serves management's interests in dividing us.

How about you drop the narrow-minded, judgemental stuff and respect what your workmates are telling you about their job? Unless of course, you know better about their job than they do.

As Ronnie rightly says, the particular issue of SB tip-outs has been talked to death and is receiving a little more attention than one driver's gripe deserves.

Tubeworker would like to hear more from the detrainment staff about how the dispute is going, what is the best way forward, and what everyone else on the job can do to support you.
