Not My 'Preference'!

London Underground has sent station staff a 'preferencing' form. It says this is our 'opportunity to have our say' on where we work in LU's post-cuts world. It says this system will be 'fair and effective for everyone'. How fair?

Totally unfair, as the 'online map' on the Fit for the Future website shows us. If you type into the online map that you're an SSMF and want to work in the Green Park area, the website tells you that you could end up working across 43 station areas - including Tooting Bec, Stratford and Arnos Grove! If you type in 'Bank', you could end up working at Balham, Tottenham Hale or Redbridge!

A CSA typing in 'Camden' is given a list of 96 potential locations - from Walthamstow to Tooting! A CSA typing in Oxford Circus gets 136 stations, from Morden to Harlesden and anywhere in between!

We can express a 'preference', but we have no real choice, no control over where we will work, under this system. LU is letting us 'have our say' only so it can completely ignore it. It's almost impossible to imagine a system less fair than one where you select a station where you would like to work - only to be told that you could end up at 135 others that you have not chosen!

LU wants our 'preferences' by 19th January. It's placing pressure on us at a totally inappropriate time of year. LU's guidance on locations is incomprehensible, the preferencing form itself is illogical. We absolutely cannot submit ourselves to this process. LU is messing around with our lives and it simply doesn't care. As is so often the case, strike action might be the only way to remind LU that
we are human beings who cannot be treated like cattle!
