As one of London Underground's many beleaguered Ticket Office staff who have serious concerns for their job security it was good to see our old friend Ken Livingstone stick the knife in even further with his new fare announcements for next year. With the minimum single cash fare rising to £3 regardless of what zone you're in it seems that London Underground are content to blackmail a reluctant general public into purchasing their "Wonderful and self lauded oystercards."From personal experience I have found that many customers despite so called financial savings that they find the system confusing and not very user friendly. With proposed reduced Ticket Office opening hours especially in outlying areas the problems that come with this system will only be exacerbated.
The relentless drive to total oystercard implementation is the biggest threat to Ticket Office staff jobs that we have ever faced and is viewed by staff as the first step along to reduced staffed or even unstaffed stations.
The old saying is supposedly "the World's your oyster" but to many ticket office staff these words have a very hollow ring to them.
To quote a line from a Jam song "Your world's your oyster but your futures a clam!" How true that feels at the moment.
