The politics of "black power": interview with Darcus Howe

A new TV drama — Guerrilla — tells the story of the British Black Panthers. Long-time black and left activist Darcus Howe, who recently died, was a founder member of the group and consultant for the show. In this interview from 1995 Howe discussed the politics of “black power” with Dan Katz.

Darcus Howe: The Panthers have been grossly misrepresented in political circles. They were an intensely revolutionary organisation, the largest non-establishment political party ever to exist in America — larger than the Communist Party or any left-wing group.

Rail strike solidarity rally in Liverpool

We're not near a general strike yet. How do we move towards one?

#GeneralStrike is trending on Twitter in the UK. And with good reason. Tens of millions are outraged by what is happening to working-class people’s incomes and living standards, and millions at least inspired by the strikes breaking out in many places.

Descriptive phrases like “half the country is on strike” are being used a lot too. And indeed the level of strikes has shot up. It is not yet anywhere near a general strike, or at a point where one could plausibly be achieved by simple agitation for it.

Why secularism matters

About the author:

"Hein Htet Kyaw (Abu Bakr)" is a socialist hacktivist actively struggling against the state blasphemy laws and state censorship in Myanmar. He is a spokesperson for an atheist/humanist organisation called Burmese Atheists. He describes himself as a libertarian Marxist who sees Stalinism as oppressive and exploitative as capitalism, probably more.

Socialism vs capitalism

The world’s richest man, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, has increased his wealth from $130 billion to $186 billion during the pandemic. US billionaires in general have gained by about the same. Meanwhile poverty in the US has exploded.

Thirty years ago US billionaires owned less wealth than the poorest half of US society. Today they own four times as much.
