No to war, no to Saddam!

The following petition was circulated by the AWL in the anti-war movement in 2002-3. No to war! No to Saddam! For democracy and international solidarity! Will you add your signature to the statement below, in order to make heard an international democratic and socialist voice against both the US's planned war on Iraq and Saddam Hussein's dictatorship? The original text of the statement was produced by the Campaign for Peace and Democracy in the USA, http://www.cpdweb.org, and signed by Michael Albert, Noam Chomsky, Edward Said and many others. We have edited it very slightly so as to make a...

AWL leaflet to "Respect" conference 25/01/04

IT IS excellent news that large numbers of left activists are meeting today to discuss a challenge to Blair. But if it is to be more than a feeble stunt, a new coalition must go forward on lines quite different from those pursued up to now by the organisers of this conference. Hundreds of thousands of young people are coming to define themselves as anti-capitalist. Hundreds of thousands were drawn into political activity for the first time by the protests against the Iraq war. Some of those not all, of course now want to understand the capitalist system that produces such wars and how to...

LGBT Pride parade leaflet text

This is the text of the leaflet handed out by Workers' Liberty supporters at the Pride Parade on 26 July... Sexual freedom, social freedom! 1969, the Stonewall riot, when drag queens, transsexuals and rebellious lesbian and gay youth fought back against what had been routine harassment by police, is generally seen as the birth of the LGBT movement. Stonewall didn't happen in isolation. It happened during the height of the anti-Vietnam War movement. The '60s had seen large scale anti-colonial movements in Africa and Asia. In so-called 'communist' countries, democracy and workers' rights were...

Neither Washington nor Beijing, but international socialism

Workers' Liberty leaflet for National Missile Defence protest THE ARROGANCE of the US ruling class, heightened by their years as the sole world superpower since 1991, threatens to plunge the world back into a new nuclear arms race. George W Bush's "National Missile Defence" project will siphon off much-needed resources to arms-industry profiteers. Designed to demonstrate US invulnerability and overwhelming dominance to the world, it may well set going a new global arms race. To justify its military plans, Bush's administration is waving the flag and talking up enemies. It chose to "talk tough"...

Livingstone for Mayor?

This Workers' Liberty leaflet was given out at Ken Livingstone's public meeting, 15 Feb, Westminster Central Hall: Issues for the left: Livingstone for Mayor? Tony Blair is attempting to exclude Ken Livingstone from the selection process which will decide Labour's candidate for London mayor. This is authoritarian and undemocratic. There should be a free and fair internal Labour Party election to select Labour's candidate for Mayor. Blair's actions tell us how far the Labour Party has degenerated under his leadership. What sort of candidate for mayor do trade unionists and Labour supporters...

Kosova and the political and moral collapse of the left in 1999

This is the text of a Workers' Liberty leaflet handed out at the SWP's 'Marxism' event in 1999: The ethnic Albanians of Kosova were Milosevic's first victims. From the late 1980s the ethnic Albanians of Kosova lived under an ultra-chauvinist Serb regime, led by Milosevic, which imposed Apartheid-style rule on the region. In 1990 the area's limited autonomy was abolished. The only Albanian-language daily paper, Rilidja, was banned, as were all TV and radio broadcasts in Albanian. In the following months 115,000 Albanian workers were fired from their jobs, to be replaced by Serbs. All Kosovars...
